Each year, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes college/university and high school students for excellence in television production. Brittany Peckham, who graduated from Fairmont High School in May, earned the prestigious Emmy Award in the “Short Form – Non-Fiction” category for her video titled, “Born to Create.”
Fairmont Interactive Media instructor, Scott Leo, notes that this is the second consecutive year that a Fairmont student has won an Emmy, and that Peckham is one of only 10 high school students in the Ohio Valley Chapter to win an Emmy in the 2017 NATAS annual competition.
In addition to Peckham’s win, Fairmont student, Max Williams received an "Honorable Mention" as a photographer for his project titled "Hocking Hills," and Max and fellow Interactive Media students, Megan Guyett, Syrrina Mullins, and Tim Edmonds received an "Honorable Mention" for their "Stand Up for Public Schools" video.
The 2017 Student Production Award competition received entries from colleges, universities and high schools across the Ohio Valley Chapter’s four-state region, covering Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. Industry professionals judge and critique the entries, which showcase a wide range of talent from these future broadcasters and media producers.
“The work of our region’s students continues to impress the professionals who judge their submissions,” said Leslie Blackston-Favors, High School Student Awards Chairman for the Ohio Valley Chapter.
Scholarship and College Student Awards Chairman, Harrison Hove, added, “Across all the various media disciplines, the students of the Ohio Valley Chapter embody the standard of excellence that NATAS was founded to maintain. Congratulations to those who have been honored this year. We’re proud to have the opportunity to encourage and mentor these dynamic students.”
Leo and his students will travel to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, on August 5, where they will be recognized for their award-winning work during the Ohio Valley Chapter’s annual Emmy Awards Gala.
