'The Odd Couple' Coming to Fairmont High School

It’s played on Broadway, the "Big Screen," and in living rooms across America, and now it’s playing on the Fairmont Stage. The Kettering Fairmont High School Theatre Department presents Neil Simon’s "The Odd Couple," January 28, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fairmont Auditorium.

This classic play follows the disheveled, recently divorced Oscar Madison as he helps his fastidious friend Felix Ungar cope after separating from his wife. What could possibly go wrong when the best friends move in together?

"The Odd Couple (Female Version)" Hits the Fairmont Stage

The Fairmont Theatre Department brings "The Odd Couple (Female Version)" to the stage on January 21, 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kettering Fairmont High School Auditorium.

Neil Simon’s "The Odd Couple (Female Version)" is based on the well-known Broadway play of 1965, the movie of 1968, and the beloved TV show of the 70’s and was written in 1986, two decades after the original version.

"The Odd Couple (Female Version)" follows the unique relationship of the slovenly Olive Madison and the pristine Florence Unger as they each go through divorces with the help of their close knit group of friends.

What we see in the play, however, is that the conflicts that ended their marriages are nothing compared to the hilarity that ensues when these two opposites prove that even the best of friends can be the worst of roommates!

Fairmont Theatre Presents Two Versions of "The Odd Couple"

The Kettering Fairmont High School Theatre Department is giving theater-goers the opportunity to experience two versions of a well-known and much-loved play by the incomparable Neil Simon.

"The Odd Couple (Female Version)" will be presented on January 21, 22 and 23. The more traditional version of "The Odd Couple," featuring the characters of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison, will be presented on January 28, 29 and 30.  The Fairmont Theatre Department will present both plays at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium at Fairmont High School.

Flu vs. Cold...Know the Difference

The flu -- more scientifically known as “influenza” -- is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus and is most prevalent during “flu season,” which typically runs from October through May. In most communities, school-age children are the first to get the flu. While a cold and the flu are both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different types of viruses and the symptoms and treatment for each is different.

Use this chart to learn the difference between the two. If your child or any family member is experiencing symptoms that sound more like the flu than a cold, call your doctor right away. You can also download Questions to Ask Your Doctor  so that you and your family members are prepared when you go to a doctor's appointment.

KCS STEM Fellows Participate in 'Air Camp'

Three of the Kettering City School District's STEM Fellows -- teachers who have completed the rigorous STEM Fellowship Program through the Dayton Regional STEM Center -- recently had the opportunity to expand on what they learned during their training by participating in an "Air Camp."

Melanie Byers (6th-grade science at Kettering Middle School), Joe Duncan (7th-grade science teacher at Van Buren Middle School) and Ben McCombs (7th-grade science and social studies at Van Buren Middle School) found out about the first-ever teacher Air Camp through the contacts they made during their STEM Fellowships. “We were able to spend the weekend learning about aerospace engineering from some amazing professionals.  We went behind-the-scenes at Dayton International Airport, Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Sinclair Community College’s flight school,” says Byers.

Board Receives Report-Out on Survey

In May, the Kettering City School District contracted with Fallon Research and Communications, Inc. to conduct a community survey, and Paul Fallon of Fallon Research and Communications, Inc., attended a Kettering Board of Education meeting in late August to present the results of the survey to the board.

According to Scott Inskeep, superintendent of the Kettering Schools, the district had not conducted a survey in a number of years. “It is good practice for a school district to survey its residents every couple of years, and to have it done by a reputable firm that specializes in doing school surveys,” says Inskeep.

Phone outages will vary from approximately an hour at the Barnes Building to sometime Friday morning, depending on the order in which each building's system is converted. We Extend our Sympathies to Chardon Schools
Our deepest sympathies go out to all of the students, families, school personnel and community members affected by the tragedy on February 27th in the Chardon Local School District. At times like this, we are reminded that a catastrophe can happen anywhere and at anytime.

I want to reassure all of our families that the schools in the Kettering City School District are as safe as they possibly can be. All buildings have emergency procedures and safety response plans in place, and we work closely with police and firefighter personnel and drill/practice these plans on a regular basis.

I like to believe that, in Kettering, our first line of defense is knowing our kids well and staying in close touch with them so that they feel comfortable talking to us.

Message from the Superintendent

Parents, Grandparents, Guardians, Community Members;

We are experiencing one of the most severe winters in memory.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the superintendent of schools of each individual school district to delay or cancel school.

In the Kettering City School System, our absolute top priority is always the safety of our kids and our staff.  Our second priority is the education of our students.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says that there are no national or professional standards for temperature or other weather conditions that preclude sending children outside.  Students in Minnesota might be expected to dress appropriately for cold weather of -15 degrees while students in Florida might be kept inside when the temperature approaches 40 degrees.

Message from the Superintendent
Kettering Parents and Community Members:

Our country and our community seem to be slowly recovering from a state of shock since the horrific school tragedy in Connecticut .

I am grateful to the teachers and staff of the Kettering Schools for all of their hard work this week in caring for our kids, assuaging anxieties and reassuring all of our folks as we maintained a routine, business-as-usual education mode.

I met with district administrators, building principals and the Kettering Police Department (KPD) on December 20th to calmly and rationally lay out plans for how we proceed in the post-Sandy Hook world.
Thinking of the Newtown Community
In the Kettering City Schools, our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the families and the community that suffered the horrific school tragedy last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut.

Our mode in the Kettering Schools today and through this week as we head into Winter Break is to be extra vigilant and reassuring...while maintaining as much as possible a routine "business as usual" attitude.

As always, the adults in our school buildings are fully accessible to any child who has any fears, anxieties or questions or who just wants to talk. We believe our training, practices and procedures keep our kids in the Kettering Schools as safe as they possibly can be. However, in light of recent events, we will be re-evaluating our safety measures in our schools.

2014-15 Team Postings

Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! We did our best to keep students on the same team but we had to switch some students because of staffing and scheduling reasons. Team assignments are based on creating the best educational environment at KMS. PLEASE CHECK THE TEAM ASSIGNMENTS. Don’t assume that your child will be on the same team next year. This is especially true for students going into 8th grade. Sorry, parent requests are not honored. Click on the Read More link to see the teams.

Attention Soon-To-Be 7th Grade Parents

A Message from the Superintendent at this Difficult Time
At this very difficult time, our thoughts are with the young victims of the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families and to the entire Newtown, Connecticut community as they deal with this horrible tragedy.

These types of tragedies compel us to talk with our own parents and community about the issue of safety in our schools. Student safety in school and at extra-curricular activities is the absolute top priority for everyone in the Kettering Schools. Sadly, even schools are not immune to violence, as today's tragedy and recent incidents here in our own state and across the country have shown.

Our schools are public facilities and we work hard to make them open, welcoming and inviting. At the same time, we are mindful of our responsibility to keep students safe while they are at school. We do have safety procedures in place, such as locking doors in our buildings and requiring visitors to our schools to check in at our main offices. In addition, in the Kettering Schools, we work hard to know our students and families. We work hard to know their lives and their issues. We believe that our teachers and staff members are vigilant in working to know if something is not right, seeing danger coming and acting proactively to avert trouble. This is our first line of defense.

Tdap Vaccine Verification Due by May 25th
The Ohio Department of Health requires a dose of the Tdap, or TD, vaccine for all students prior to entering the 7th grade. The Kettering City Schools request that parents of students who will be entering the 7th grade for the 2012-2013 school year provide written documentation by May 25th to the school nurse, verifying that their students have had the immunization. If an incoming 7th grader has not provided verification of having had the vaccine prior to school starting on August 13th, the child will not be able to attend the first day of school.

Parents/guardians must provide written documentation to the school nurse verifying that your student has had the immunization. We are requesting that the documentation be turned in no later than Friday, May 9, 2014. If we do not receive it prior to school starting on August 12, 2014 your child will not be able to attend the first day of school or play sports.

The Community Outreach Clinic (Public Health Dayton Montgomery County) will be at the Kettering Recreation Center at 2900 Glengarry Dr. from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 3, 2014 and May 5, 2014 to provide vaccinations, by appointment only.

Understanding the 'EXPLORE' Assessments

Students in the Kettering City Schools take the EXPLORE tests when they are 8th graders. These assessments are designed to show a student's strengths and weaknesses in English, mathematics, reading and science. The district feels it is important for parents and students to understand the results of these assessments, as well as the things the district is doing to intervene when a student is struggling with a subject area and provide enrichment when a student excels in a subject area. Click on Read More to access a presentation on "Understanding the Results of EXPLORE," presented by Dave DeLon, the district's Secondary Curriculum Leader.

District Granted 'Waiver Day'

The Kettering City School District has applied for and been granted a “Waiver Day” by the State of Ohio to allow us to do some very important training with our staff members district wide for the coming school year.

The state requires that students be in school for 178 days of instruction each school year. Our school calendar in the Kettering City Schools currently includes the 178 days of instruction for our students. As I noted, we have requested and been granted what is known as a “Waiver Day” for August 30th, which means that students will not be in school on that day.

We have requested this because we will be training all staff members on new district safety and security procedures and we will be training our teachers and administrators on the new Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) on August 30th.

Message from the Superintendent
Kettering Parents & Community Members:

Happy New Year and welcome back to our students and staff! I hope that everyone had a relaxing Winter Break.

In the Kettering City School District, we have always prided ourselves on open, friendly, welcoming, and inviting school buildings. Locked-down, fortress-like schools run counter to the grain of educators who consider schooling a community endeavor. However, as the safety of our students is always our absolute top priority, we are re-evaluating our security measures in light of recent events and the current state of our society.    (Continued...)

Congratulations to all of us!... “Excellent with Distinction”
