BONJOUR ET BIENVENUE!  (Hello and Welcome!)

Mme Mary Townsend holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Dayton.  She recently attained “Master Teacher” Status from the Ohio Department of Education.  Mme Townsend is a member of the American Association of French Teachers (AATF) and the Ohio Foreign Language Association (OFLA). Passionate about teaching French and working with children, Mme Townsend has taught all levels of French, from pre-school children to high school seniors. In the past five years, she has garnered over 300 hours of professional development through workshops, immersion experiences, travel and conferences. She recently presented at the OFLA State Conference on "Authentic Resources for the AP-IB Classroom." She is certified to teach Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate French Language and Culture courses. Mme Townsend has studied abroad in Paris at the Institute St. Marie and in Québec at the Université Laval.  She has also studied the Spanish, German, Irish and Japanese languages.

Mme Townsend has traveled extensively in Europe, Canada, Mexico and the United States.  She has taken dozens of Fairmont students to Europe and will take another trip overseas in June of 2014, and designed several special credit flex curriculum opportunities for traveling students. She is the Fairmont advisor for French Club and the French National Honor Society as well as the newly-formed FHS Dance Club “Maxed Out.” During the past several years, she served as host mother to two international students who attended Fairmont High School. Mme Townsend and her family reside in Kettering. She is the proud mother of three Fairmont graduates.

Mary Townsend was chosen as a recipient of the 2013-2014 Kettering Education Foundation Grant for her submission “Allons au Cinéma”  to purchase a variety of films from around the Francophone world.  Subjects of the many movies are aligned with AP and IB themes including health and personal well-being, family and community life, traditions and customs, education, esthestics, science and technology, in addition to worldwide challenges such as the global economy, war, poverty, homelessness and prejudice.

This year, she revived the opportunity for all Fairmont French students to participate in the National French Contest, which takes place on February 27, 2014.  -mt
