Hello and Welcome to room 307, Mrs. Kappel & Mrs. Hanchak's homeroom. That's right, two teachers!

I am Mrs. Kappel and I job-share with Mrs. Hanchak here at Beavertown in 4th grade. We want there to be an open, two-way street for communication with the parents of our students. Below are some ways you can contact us:

Phone: 499-1740
* You can leave us a voicemail at anytime and we will get back with you as soon as possible.

Email:
Mrs. Kappel --- emily.kappel@ketteringschools.org
Mrs. Hanchak--- jessica.hanchak@ketteringschools.org
* This is the best way to contact us. It also makes sharing any needed information with other teachers very easy.

Notes: You can send a note to us in your child's agenda or to school with them at any time.

Remind: This is a great tool that 3/5 teachers in the country are using to send quick messages to parents. You can sign up to get messages through text messages or email. Please let me know if you need our class information to get quick messages from us.

Have a great school year!

Mrs. Kappel

Welcome to room 307 in the 4th grade

at Beavertown Elementary!

I am excited to start another school year job-sharing with my teaching partner of 7 years, Jessica Hanchak. This will be my 11th year teaching, and 9th teaching fourth grade here at Beavertown. I will be teaching math, social studies, and some of the science in our classroom this year.  Mrs. Hanchak will be teaching the english-language arts and the science portions of our class.

With our new Common Core standards the curriculum is changing and so is the teaching. During our math lessons this year, I will continue to use the Math In Focus textbook that implements Singapore Math Strategies. I have been incorporating these strategies for the last 5 years. I have seen the results in my very own students, as well as other students here at Beavertown. I believe in these strategies 100% and am excited to share them with my students and their families. We will be using a very hands-on approach using manipulatives often and learning "why" the math works before "how" the math works.

Our science standards have also changed with the Ohio New Learning Standards. We will be doing as many hands on science experiments as we can this school year.

With our social studies standards this year we will be exploring how American history has impacted our homestate of Ohio. The students will be learning the names and locations of the 50 states as well.

I believe that student learning does not just happen at school, but in the home as well. As a teacher and a parent, I believe that the parents are the biggest influence on a child's education and how they feel about school. Mrs. Hanchak and I want to work together with the parents to teach our students and encourage them to be lifelong learners. We also believe that each student is an individual and will learn at their own pace with their own set of expectations. Throughout the year we will continue to challenge each student at their education level and set goals of improvement at all levels.

I look foward to getting to know all of my students and their families to work as a team in the students' education.

Mrs.  Kappel
